Tell your Member of Congress to support the creation of a Consumer Financial Protection Agency

The Financial system has failed the American public. More than $13 trillion of household wealth has been destroyed.  Now, the American public expects and deserves some basic rules of fairness in the marketplace and legitimate enforcement of those rules.  A Consumer Financial Protection Agency (CFPA) would provide a critical check on deceptive or unfair consumer practices, such as those that led to the foreclosure epidemic and ultimately to the economic crisis we are all experiencing today.

We need a strong CFPA and we need it now.

We, the undersigned, urge Congress to support the creation of a Consumer Financial Protection Agency.

As the nation continues to reel from the current financial and economic crisis, the need for real change in the rules of the financial game has never been clearer. We need a strong and fair regulatory system that has the resources and authority necessary to police Wall Street and the big banks. The economy cannot truly recover until our financial system is put on a path that ensures transparency and accountability for everyone.

Real financial reform must include a consumer watchdog agency, like the proposed Consumer Financial Protection Agency (CFPA), which, similar to the FDA for food and drugs, will set basic safety standards. We need the CFPA to protect families, and the market as a whole, from loans designed to trick and trap us, and to encourage fair competition.

Actual reform is about fixing the daily problems that the crisis has caused for me and my community. We must ensure that the banking system helps people stay in their homes; and makes smart investments in communities and businesses to create good jobs and strong neighborhoods. It's imperative that Congress act to protect consumers and guarantee we will not face another meltdown like the current one.
