Summary: SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania is the largest union of health care workers in the state. It is a progressive union comprised of over 20,000 members who work in nursing homes, hospitals, state institutions, and as home health care aids. We are committed to bringing together all health care workers to dramatically improve the quality of patient care and the living standards of the people who take care of those patients.

As we move forward building a 21st century health care union, we are looking for highly skilled internal organizers who can develop rank and file leaders and who can move the union’s program in both the workplace and the community.
Description: With the establishment of a centralized grievance handling system through a Member Resource Center, we currently need dynamic organizers in the field to mobilize our existing membership. We are looking for people with a strong organizing background who also have some collective bargaining knowledge and experience.

These positions are based in Southwestern, Central, & Northeastern Pennsylvania, and potentially other locations around the state.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Internal Organizer performs a wide range of duties which are focused on empowering and developing member leaders of our union.

- Engage members

- Identify and develop leaders

- Demonstrate a curiosity in members lives and struggles

- Map member relationships and interests and align them with the overall goals of the union

- Move campaigns and take initiatives on promoting strategies

- Optimize use of resources of the local including the Member Resource Center.

- Build the union’s political capacity

- Support members in workplace struggles

- Lead contract negotiations

- Carry out assigned responsibilities in a competent and professional manner in keeping with the Local’s overall goals and expectations.
Qualifications: The Internal Organizer must have a demonstrated ability to lead, motivate and inspire members to develop into leaders and participate in key union programs (i.e. politics, organizing, bargaining, etc.)

Prior experience in union, political, or community organizing is required.

Union representation, and/or contract negotiation experience is preferred.

Other Qualification include:

- Demonstrated understanding of the organizing model and how it can be used to empower members and insure superior outcomes in workers’ lives.

- Ability to take initiative and be creative in developing new roles for members within the union and provide the support needed to be successful.

- Sound interpersonal and communication skills appropriate to providing a quality member experience including the ability to establish and cultivate respectful relationships with people from diverse backgrounds.

- Working knowledge and understanding of collective bargaining issues and human resource management principles.

- Ability to develop member leaders to deal with worksite issues..

- Sound organizational skills to manage and prioritize work subject to deadlines in a dynamic and changing environment, as an individual and as a member of a team.

- Demonstrate ability to formulate and deliver on short-term and long-term member development and capacity building goals.

- Knowledge of Microsoft Office, databases and Internet.
Compensation: Salary range depends on experience.
