Community Organizer, Clean Water Action, Allentown (Posted February 7)
Clean Water Action and Clean Water Fund are seeking an experienced Community Organizer to work on health related environmental issue campaigns in the Lehigh Valley. Clean Water Action (CWA) is a national, grassroots environmental organization that seeks to protect the environ¬ment and safeguard public health, promote passage of strong environmental laws and help communities address local environmental problems affecting them. Clean Water Fund (CWF) is a national research and education organization which promotes the public interest on issues related to water, waste and toxics.
This position will involve coordinating and organizing local campaigns for clean water and protection of our drinking water in the Lehigh Valley. Current local campaigns consist of efforts to better protect local watersheds from pollution and to get local municipalities to enact water protection ordinances. The Organizer will also work to implement Clean Water’s state and national campaigns to enact strict standards to protect rivers and aquifers that are drinking water sources and to enact comprehensive global warming legislation.
Responsibilities:
• Develop a strong working knowledge of streams and rivers that run through the Lehigh Valley. Administer campaigns working to increase the level of protections on those streams and work with watershed advocacy groups.
• Promote the adoption of modern stormwater management plans in local communities.
• Monitor municipal and corporate development that has an impact on the environment, especially water. Attend, speak at and organize around open forums, public meetings and board meetings as necessary.
• Work on state campaigns to promote better water protection rules, including protection of the sources of our drinking water and protecting streams from development with required stream buffers.
• Advance national campaigns undertaken by Clean Water Action.
• Help coordinate media and public relations activities in the Lehigh Valley.
• Coordinate Clean Water Action’s electoral activities in the Lehigh Valley including endorsements, voter education and voter mobilization.
• Assist with fundraising including some institutional and individual donor fundraising and reporting to funders.
• Equip Clean Water Action’s field canvass with the resources it needs to do door-to-door public education and organizing campaigns.
• Manage the Allentown office, program interns, volunteer files and overall records.

Qualifications:
• Paid or volunteer experience in
some form of grassroots organizing.
Must have experience in successful
mobilization of groups of people,
volunteer recruitment and leadership
development. Over two year’s paid
experience preferred.
• Strong oral and written
communication skills.
• Bachelor degree preferred.
• Canvassing experience a plus.
• Environmental expertise a strong
plus.
