Pennsylvania ACORN Voting Rights Organizer / Assistant Legislative Director
Job Description
The Voting Rights Organizer is responsible for coordinating all aspects of PA ACORN’s Voting Rights Program. The Voting Rights Organizer will work with staff, ACORN membership and ACORN’s partner organization, Project Vote, to ensure that voter registration barriers are eliminated for low- and moderate- income Pennsylvanians and they successfully cast
ballots on Election Day.
Qualifications: B.A. in Public Policy, Political Science or related
subject. 2 + years experience with non-profit, political or community
organization. Background in community organizing preferred. Knowledge
and understanding of political issues affecting low- and moderate-
income families.
This Position is Based in Philadelphia but will Include a Significant Amount of In-State Travel.
Supervisor: Legislative Director
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
General
Develop relationships with election officials, allies and policymakers
that will facilitate effective information-gathering and advocacy
Research and understand election laws, rules and procedures in Pennsylvania. Research and understand problems related to election administration and best practices in the field.
Keep up to date on developments in the field and current topics in elections
Statewide Election Policy Advocacy
Track and monitor statewide legislative issues relating to voting/elections
Coordinate public education campaign relating to voting/ election legislative proposals
Develop policy briefs, opinion articles, e-mail alerts and other public materials relating to relevant legislation
Coordinate advocacy strategy with allies regarding relevant legislation
Participate in meetings with legislators, allies and ACORN members to discuss legislative proposals
Work with Project Vote to introduce progressive voting/ elections related proposals
Election Coalition Building
Work with Florida C3 table coalition & other coalitions and analyze need for statewide coordination
Contribute staff leadership and time to statewide election protection coalition, and if necessary, organize and manage an effective facilitation of statewide coalition to address electoral issues
Advocate with allies for an electoral system that meets the needs of Pennsylvania’s low- and moderate- income voters and potential voters
Grassroots Voter Organizing
Work with ACORN organizing staff to identify voter/ electoral issues in the field and address problems through campaign activities
Work with ACORN organizing staff to train member leaders to speak to the press, policy makers and the public about voter/ electoral issues
Assist in strategy development for voting rights campaigns
Voter Media Relations
Develop press materials (advisories, release, etc.) to highlight ACORN’s Voting Rights campaign
Cultivate relationships with statewide political press
Assist in coordination of press events highlighting ACORN’s Voting Rights campaign
