PITTSBURGH, PA -- A new report released today shows that 3.1 million young adults have been able to remain on their parent's health insurance due to the Affordable Care Act. The Affordable Care Act requires insurers to allow young adults to remain on their parents' family plans until their 26th birthday, even if they move away from home or graduate from school. This policy took effect on September 2010. In recognition of this milestone, the Healthy Artists team, led by Julie Sokolow, have just leaked a must-see video about the struggles of one of their own, Daniel Menges, a 23-year-old photographer/artist and recent college graduate, who just this week got into a bike accident and fractured three vertebrae. The video details how Daniel was saved from $10,000 of medical debt because The Affordable Care Act allowed him to stay on his mother's insurance plan. The video is a compelling, timely piece that demonstrates the importance of the Affordable Care Act and similar health care reform measures and the willingness of young people to speak up.
Julie Sokolow, a 25-year-old Pitchfork-acclaimed musician turned indie filmmaker, has spent the last year talking about the Affordable Care Act. After years of getting to know her peers at the University of Pittsburgh and then acting as a key figure in the Pittsburgh arts scene, she says "I've encountered countless numbers of talented and eloquent young adults who struggle with a broken healthcare system, and they have just been waiting to speak about how the Affordable Care Act is helping them."
In recognition that 89,000 young adults in Pennsylvania are on their parent's health insurance because of the Affordable Care Act, Sokolow and the Healthy Artists team aspire to mobilize the nation's young adults to advocate for themselves and their families. Her main approach is to expose the horrific injustices caused by insurance company abuses, while creating the space to support the Affordable Care Act and a healthcare system that works for all.
